2nd Annual BC River’s Day - Sept. 28th, Goldstream Provincial Park

Thousands of British Columbians celebrate BC Rivers Day on the last Sunday in September each year, making it Canada’s largest river appreciation event.
BC Rivers Day generates public awareness about British Columbia’s waterways. Recreational clubs, conservation organizations, community groups, schools, and local governments host BC Rivers Day events across the province.

Victoria BC Rivers Day is a free community festival and family event hosted by BC Creek Protection Society to celebrate free flowing rivers and the importance of our river heritage through information displays, educational videos, riverside nature walks, children’s crafts, wreath making, fishing demonstrations, bake-sale, and more…
WHERE: Goldstream Provincial Park infront of the Nature House.
Directions: The park is located 16km northwest of Victoria on the Trans Canada Hwy #1
WHEN: Sunday, September 28th, 11AM to 4PM, rain or shine. We will have tent covered areas in case of rainy weather.
(Please note: regular vehicle parking fees apply in the park, however, if you park by the highway there is no charge.)

September 23 UPDATE
Don’t panic if you’ve seen construction in Goldstream this week, the path from the main parking lot to the Nature House will be re-opened and accessible for the weekend. The Nature House will also be open during the event.
NEW! Guided nature walks to the Estuary (for more details see below). The Estuary is normally closed to general public as this is sensitive wildlife habitat but on BC Rivers Day, guided nature walks to the Estuary will be taking place every hour to use all our senses and explore what nature has to offer.
Craft stations:
We will have several craft stations for kids of all ages to learn how to make fun and easy natural crafts. Adults and older children can participate in beautiful fall wreath-making.
Fishing Pond Salmon Identification:
Magnet salmon fishing for kids to learn how to identify different types of salmon and learn interesting facts about them while practicing fishing skills.
Learn to fish!:
(New this year!)
Experienced members of Golden Rods and Reels will be available to demonstrate casting and retreiving, as well as tying different knot types. Fishing rods and rope will be available for hands-on experience.
Riverside Nature Walks to the Estuary (depends on weather conditions):
Kids and parents can enjoy a guided interpretive nature walk to the Estuary where the river meats the sea to learn and discover the plants and creatures that live in this area. Binoculars and a pocket sized magnifying lens will be helpful for the walks. GUMBOOTS are highly recommended. And don’t forget your camera! (dogs are not allowed into the estuary).

Information Booths
Did you ever want to learn more about salmon, BC’s wildlife, or how we can help protect BC’s pristine wilderness? Knowledgeable biologists and staff from the Raincoast Conservation Foundation and the Western Canada Wilderness Committee will be able to satisfy your curiosity and provide you with interesting information.
Bake Sale:
Enjoy gingerbread cookies, muffins, and other delicious food items found at our bake sale. Bring your own mug and have some free tea or hot chocolate.
