This year’s second annual BC Rivers day at the Goldstream provincial park was a great success. As a continuous stream of visitors poured into the park throughout the day (total about 500 people), volunteers had very full hands helping out at the different stations. Visitors of all ages became engaged in all types of interesting outdoor activities. While children were busy painting salmon at the craft station and catching fish at the fishing pond and fishing demos, adults entertained themselves with wreath-making and learning about BC’s precious waterways. It was nice to see interest in the guided Estuary walks co-ordinated by BC Creek Protection Society and Raincoast. Groups of 20 – 30 people walked down to the Goldstream Estuary, normally off-limits to the public. During our small expeditions we were lucky to taste some sea asparagus, find hidden bear tracks and scat, examine salmon bones and look at a kingfisher. (This was just a small taste what one can come across in this very special habitat). At the end of the day, everyone was able to take back home something - whether it was a beautiful fall wreath, a painting, information pamphlets about our rivers and wildlife, or just knowledge about keeping our rivers happy, healthy and free flowing.
